I first sailed with the Sea Scouts in a Lelievlet. After a few years, I realized I wanted to sail faster boats. Through experience on smaller boats, I came across an Instagram post about Holland Ocean Racing, and I knew I couldn’t let this opportunity pass. As a child, I had always dreamed of sailing on an Ocean Racer. So the chance to train every weekend on a VO60 and even compete in races was something I couldn’t miss. My sailing experience was modest, especially when it came to all the terms used on board, the numerous lines, and the many different sails. When I joined as a trainee, I was 14 years old and by far the youngest on the team. I realized I would have to give 300% to keep up with the team and learn as much as possible. Fortunately, the coaches and skippers were very friendly and eager to explain everything. In my first years, I learned a lot—mostly by making mistakes and learning from them. I spent five years on the team, during which I experienced every position on board. I started as a grinder, which was an ideal position to observe all the other roles and, of course, to demonstrate perseverance. Next, I became a main trimmer. I found this very interesting but not action-packed enough. Then I moved to the foredeck as a mast man. On the foredeck, I discovered this was my place on the boat, and I later combined it with the runners. I also spent time in the pit, which was fun as well. From the pit, you play an important role in communication and in coordinating all maneuvers. Later, I returned to the foredeck, this time as number 1. During races, I regularly trimmed the headsails and was often at the helm as well. This ultimately led to me receiving my crew certificate. During these five years, I had the opportunity to sail in numerous races: twice in the Rolex Fastnet Race, the Baltic Sea Race, Gotland Runt Race, four times in the North Sea Race, and four times in the Vuurschepen Race. I grew immensely as a sailor through the many miles I sailed. But even more importantly, I grew as a person. Being part of an offshore team at such a young age taught me many life lessons and provided experiences that I can carry into everyday life. Eventually, I made the decision to pursue my biggest dream: I was selected for a career in the military. Unfortunately, this meant I had to leave the team. Since the summer of 2024, I have been pursuing my training with the Defense Forces.

I spent four years as a trainee with Holland Ocean Racing. Before I started, my sailing experience was mostly limited to dinghies and small keelboats. During my time with Holland Ocean Racing, however, I gained extensive knowledge of offshore sailing on an ocean racing yacht. I learned about the different roles on board, how they work together, and how to carry out tasks efficiently while collaborating closely with the team. I developed skills on the foredeck, optimized sail trim, learned steering and navigation, performed maintenance, and much more. Beyond improving my sailing abilities, I experienced enormous personal growth. I started off reserved and hesitant, but I learned—both literally and figuratively—to use my voice. Initially, I was stationed midship, and my calls could barely be heard on the foredeck. Over time, my confidence and vocal presence grew to the point where everyone on the boat could hear me. I also developed leadership skills as a watch leader and enhanced my organizational abilities as a team manager. The inner strength and self-assurance I discovered on board will stay with me forever. The most unforgettable race I participated in was the 2023 Rolex Fastnet Race. Despite challenging weather, our team maintained an incredible atmosphere, complete control, and total situational awareness on the boat. Currently, I am focusing on my first full-time job as a physician while continuing to race and increasingly concentrating on shorthanded sailing. My ultimate goal is to participate in The Ocean Race. There, I aim to combine my offshore sailing experience with my medical background and contribute to innovations in the world of ocean racing.

I was part of the team from late 2021 to late 2024 and thoroughly enjoyed the three years with the team. I started as a novice offshore sailor, with a single Transatlantic crossing as my main experience. The training and races during these years taught me a great deal, from foredeck to helmsman, and from trimmer to watch leader. I learned how to work together and become a professional. Mentally, I experienced what it truly means to have a high-performance sports mindset and what sacrifices are necessary to achieve results. This is something I will carry with me forever. My best race with Holland Ocean Racing was the 2023 Fastnet. It had it all: the team was in top form, we overcame every challenge, and achieved an outstanding result. A memorable moment was my first Lightvessel Race, where the railing broke off the deck due to a faulty sheet. Everyone worked together to repair it as quickly as possible and get back on course to sail the North Sea Race in England. I now have a Mini 6.50. My next step is sailing the Mini-Transat. My ultimate goal is the Vendée Globe, so I plan to continue growing through different projects and classes to reach that goal. The Mini-Transat is a perfect starting point after my time with Holland Ocean Racing.
